A TOTAL of 2,220 permits and clearances have been approved by local government units (LGUs) for the construction of telecommunication towers as of Monday, November 30, 2020, Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said.
He said only 712 applications remained pending.
The regulatory process for the construction of cell sites was streamlined under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act (Bayanihan 2) to expedite the rollout of additional cell sites in the country.
The Philippines currently has 17,850 cell sites, according to the 2019 3rd Quarter Report by TowerXChange, an informal network advisor in the market tower industry worldwide.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology earlier said the country needs at least 50,000 more cell towers to improve connectivity.
President Rodrigo Duterte, in his State of the Nation Address in July, gave telecommunications companies PLDT and Globe Telecom until December to improve their services as learning, business processes and other activities shifted to digital platforms because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
