NEARLY 100 fishermen from the municipalities of Medellin and Daanbantayan in northern Cebu were taught by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7 on how to farm seaweeds.

The BFAR 7 personnel answered the request of the faith-based nongovernment organization Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation-Integrated Development Center (JPIC-IDC) Inc. for a four-day training and orientation on seaweeds farming that was held in Barangay Tindog, Medellin.

Joel Clapano, head of the BFAR 7 Carmen Brackishwater Fish Farm, served as the resource speaker in the hands-on training on seaweed production on Nov. 12 to 13, 2020.

Clapano was accompanied by the personnel of the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division and the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division (FPSSD).

The FPSSD personnel gave a lecture to the fishermen from Nov. 10 to 11.

At least 95 fisherfolks participated during the activities. They were introduced to seaweeds culture, which could be their “alternative” livelihood aside from fishing in municipal waters.

Training fishermen on seaweed farming could help boost the seaweed sector in Central Visayas, according to the BFAR 7.
