Naa kay formal lessons isip vocal coach?

I have had some voice trainings in Manila 20 years ago under Mr. Choi Gabriel, who teaches classical music. When I was hired at A. Salonga School of Music, our mentor/head coach that time, Coach Frances Cabigon from Manila, trained us on how to properly handle students and taught us some advance techniques/methods in vocalization and how to belt out without using your throat.

How do you teach vocalization?

I usually start with the basic techniques which are the staccato and legato vocal exercises. Dapat comfortable ang student sa teacher aron dali ra i-build ilang confidence. It depends also if unsa ilahang reasons in taking up the lessons. Pang-videoke lang ba, moapil og contest or magpa-polish og songs for recording like my celebrity/recording artists, students here in Cebu. We also have what we called “deaf tone” or worst term, “yabag”. Sa ilaha, mogamit ta og lahi nga method in teaching to help them hit those notes properly.

Tinuod ba makadaut sa tingog ang bugnaw?

Sa unang panahon kay wa pa man toy vocal techniques so ginabawal jud. But now, it’s okay na, makainom ra ta og bugnaw provided that it’s not within 3 to 4 hours before and after singing. Sweets also can irritate throat so it’s a big no before singing. Also, make sure you get to sleep 8 to 10 hours before your gigs or performance.

Kinsay nag-angga nimong “Vocal Coach ng Bayan”?

It’s my co-theatre actor and a good friend of mine, Dr. Jan Michael Lao, who’s a doctor of medicine by profession and a part-time theatre actor/singer. And sunodsunod na dayun ang uban og tag nako as “Ang Vocal Coach Ng Bayan”. So nakaingun ko, maybe it’s really my fate. It’s God’s will.

Kinsa imong mga estudyante sa una?

Some of my celebrity students include Sheena Belarmino for 4 years (Tawag Ng Tanghalan kids 4th runner up, Your Face Sounds Familiar kids season 2), Lukas Magallano (1st Promil Ishine Talent Camp Grandwinner, Film/Theatre Actor, Star Magic talent, The Voice Teens season 2 contestant), Andrea Badinas (The Voice Teens Season 1 and a Viva artist), Shanen Garciso (The Clash season 2 contestant), Rowell Ucat a.k.a. “Medyo Maldito” (famous vlogger/recording artist), Meunnie Cullantes a.k.a. “Mayman ka dhai” (Viva recording artist), Alem Garcia a.k.a. “Queen of kittykatkats” (Bai TV) and Dave Quirante a.k.a. “Dodong Dave” who’s soon to be a Viva recording artist.

Describe yourself.

Maybe I could describe myself as a determined, passionate person. Goal getter, if I love something, I do everything para makuha nako. A tough, independent yet a soft and kind-hearted, single mother with two beautiful daughters, Nichola Kirstein, 13 years old, and Aellah Francesca, 10. My priorities now are my children and my career, so it’s a choice nga not in a relationship sa ta. Haha!

Taga-asa inyong kagikan?

I was born and raised in Iligan City. But my mom, Marilyn Repolido Pogoy, is from Naga, Cebu and my dad Virgilio Ligan Pogoy has relatives in Cordova but Pogoy and Ligan clans are originally from Bohol. The current Cebu City Police Director, PCol. Josefino D. Ligan is my uncle on father’s side. I transferred to Cebu in 2010 after I broke up with my ex-husband. My family has always been my source of inspiration. Thank you, Mama Marilyn, Papa Billy, my sister Mabel and brother Antonio, my nephews Gab, Inoh, Xian and Kai. My confidantes, Troy, Aga, Ai-Ai, Ricsan, Michelle and Mayshell. And most especially my beautiful daughters Olah and Sasah! God bless.
