Soldier, 3 teens killed in Eastern Visayas road mishaps

AN ARMY soldier and three teenagers were killed while 26 others were injured in six separate road accidents in Eastern Visayas towns on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

In Leyte, Army Private First Class Ronald Anota, 25, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital after his driven motorcycle had a head on collision with another motorcycle with four persons on board along the national road of Barangay Calsadhay, Burauen around 5:15 p.m.

Injured during the incident were driver Marvin Daclan and his three back riders.

In Southern Leyte, police said the 52-year-old driver of a red Montero Sports GLX l lost control of the steering wheel and bumped into an incoming motorcycle with three teenagers on board.

The incident happened around 8:40 p.m. along the national highway of Barangay Poblacion of Liloan town.

Police identified the driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) as Judy Lasala Maamo, who was immediately brought to the hospital for medical attention.

The driver will be facing charges on reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide.

While the three victims were identified as residents of Barangay Anilao, Liloan.

In Northern Samar, a 47-year-old police officer on board his Toyota vehicle accidentally bumped a carabao that suddenly crossed the national highway of Barangay Dale of San Roque town around 10:30 p.m.

The policeman, who was unharmed during the incident, was in convoy with other personnel for an intelligence monitoring activity.

In Burauen, a motorcycle hit another single motorcycle around 2 p.m. at the corner of San Agustin and San Joaquin Street, District 2.

Initial investigation said Roger Tismo, 36, was traversing San Joaquin Street going to La Paz, Leyte while Nelson Cedenia, 35, was in an opposite direction when the latter accidentally hit Tismo upon reaching the said area.

Cedenia sustained injury on different parts of his body after he slammed into the pavement.

The other driver was unharmed, police said.

However, both drivers were not able to present their license and proper documents of their vehicles during the incident.

A 34-year-old public school teacher on board a single motorcycle also accidentally bumped an eight-year-old child after the latter suddenly crossed the road along Barangay Cabadsan in Alangalang, Leyte around 1:30 p.m.

Both the driver and the victim were brought to Leyte Provincial Hospital for medical treatment.

In Tacloban City, a road accident involving multiple vehicles happened around 4:20 p.m. along Barangay 36, Sabang bridge.

Police said a defective brake caused an eight-wheeler Isuzu wing van truck, driven by Daniel Bulan, to crash into a Suzuki multicab with nine passengers on board upon reaching a descending portion of the roadway of the said area.

The impact also caused the passenger multicab to swerve left before colliding with the incoming Toyota Revo.

While the eight-wheeler truck was still in motion, it hit the left rear portion of another private Nissan Navara vehicle, which caused it to spin to the left and hit a motorcycle from the opposite direction.

The truck then ploughed through another multicab with two passengers on board, a private Toyota Vios, and a government-owned Toyota Prius vehicle driven by a police officer.

All the injured persons were brought to different hospitals for immediate medical attention, while vehicles involved incurred damages, police said in the report. (SunStar Philippines)
