NegOcc guv to students: Be conscientious with your words

NEGROS Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson called on the La Sallian community to be responsible and conscientious with their words and deeds.

Lacson, who is also an alumnus of the university, made the comment following an incident involving a first-year Information Technology (IT) student of the University of St. La Salle (USLS) who made lewd remarks on Facebook against Vice President Leni Robredo.

The USLS Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs has already launched a thorough investigation on the matter.

Lacson did not refer to any individual in the message he released on Wednesday night.

According to the governor, being a La Sallian is based on several core principles and values -- Concern for the Poor and Social Justice; Faith in God; Quality Education; Respect for all Persons; and Inclusive Community.

Lacson reminded all students of USLS that while it is true that freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed by the Constitution, such does not allow irresponsible and offensive speech meant to damage another.

"Education sets civilization apart from barbarism, particularly the La Sallian brand of education," he said. "I, too, am a La Sallian and I am truly disheartened when La Sallians utter dishonorable, imprudent, sexist and injurious comments."

The governor reminded all of the USLS community that they are expected to be the bringers of positive change. The least they can do is to be responsible and conscientious both in words and deeds.

"Being a La Sallian is not a title but a duty to live honorably," he added.
