1,700 more Covid-19 cases, 17 new deaths in Philippines

THE number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in the Philippines continues to increase by less than 2,000 a day, with the Department of Health (DOH) reporting another 1,700 infections Saturday, December 5.

In its 4 p.m. Saturday bulletin, the DOH said 1,733 new infections were added to the total tally, while 17 more patients have succumbed to the disease.

The new confirmed cases brought the country's total case count to 438,069, while the death toll has increased to 8,526 as of 4 p.m. of December 5.

Davao City posted the highest number of new cases at 162, following by Quezon City with 92, Benguet (80), Rizal (70), and Laguna (66).

The DOH said that with the 17 new deaths, the country now has a case fatality rate of 1.95 percent.

As to the number of those who have recovered from the disease, the DOH said there are now a total of 399,582 Covid-19 recoveries, with 133 new survivors reported Saturday.

This also means that 91.2 percent of the Covid-19 patients have been able to recover, it added.

And less the deaths and recoveries, the DOH said there remain 29,961 active Covid-19 cases in the Philippines.

The active cases account for 6.8 percent of the country's Covid-19 cases.

Of the active cases, 86 percent are mild cases, 6.7 percent are asymptomatic cases, 4.6 percent are critical cases, 2.4 percent are severe cases, and 0.27 percent are moderate cases.

The DOH continued to advise the public to observe proper health protocols, such as handwashing, wearing of face mask and observing social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
