Meditalk: Will husband's spinal injury affect sex life? (part 2)

(Foreword: This is the continuation of our response to Kendrah K. on her concerns of her husband's spinal cord injury.)

Dear Kendrah K.,

Now, let's continue. I have some good news for you. Remember that many of the men who have this problem who would attempt to get on with their sexual life would be successful. So, it is really up to your husband now -- whatever he wants with his sexual life. But, it is better for him to try than doing nothing at all -- just because of his fear of failing. Well, in life, sometimes, it is better to try rather than regret later, not trying at all.

Now, let's get to some statistics. For men with lower level injuries, 90 percent of them with incomplete lower level injuries who attempted sex were successful, and 65 percent of men with complete lower level injuries were successful. For men with upper level injuries, 85 percent of men with incomplete upper level injuries who attempted sex were successful, and 72 percent of men with complete upper level injuries were successful.

Men who have spinal cord injuries may have problems with ejaculation and sperm movement. As I've mentioned earlier, these men may not be able to ejaculate outside their urethra - but back to their bladder instead. Spinal cord injury would not affect the amount of sperm but the sperm may move slower than usual. If you do really want to get pregnant even with your husband's condition, then, artificial insemination can help -- especially, if your partner would ejaculate retrogradely.

Well, I hope this helps. Good luck!
