Lorna Kapunan to talk about domestic violence, sexual harassment

ZONTA Club of Cebu 1, a group of women executives and professionals, is holding a "Zoomtalk" Thursday, December 10, with women's rights advocate lawyer Lorna Patajo-Kapunan as speaker.

Kapunan, a member of Zonta Club of Makati Ayala, will share her insights on domestic violence and sexual harassment, two of the major issues affecting women around the world.

The talk will start at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 10, via Zoom, a video conferencing online platform.

Zonta Club of Cebu 1 will accommodate only 100 participants, so those

who wish to join and listen to Kapunan's talk are advised to come in early, said the club's president, Gina G. Atienza.

Atieza said the talk is interesting considering that Kapunan is "reputed to be feisty, and the Philippines' most vocal and respected women's advocate lawyer."

"She is a national icon, not only in the fields of women and human rights, but also as one of our country's Top One Hundred Lawyers 2020 chosen by the Asia Business Law Journal," she added.

Kapunan graduated from the University of the Philippines. She took up AB Political Science (1973) and LLB (Law) in 1978. She had seminar courses in Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation Tokyo (1997); World Intellectual Property Office Asian Region, Taejon Republic of Korea, (November 1998); National Institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo Italy (September 2005); and Summer Course International Humanitarian Law, Magdalene College, Cambridge University, London UK (July 2010).

A practicing laywer for about 40 years now, Kapunan is the founding partner of Kapunan & Castillo Law Offices. She has recently been recognized as among the Top 100 Lawyers of the Country.

Although known as a leading litigator because of her high profile cases, her legal expertise is extensive and includes intellectual property law, corporate and commercial law, international humanitarian law, family law, estate law and succession.

She is also an awardee of the prestigious Towns Awards (The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service) in the field of Corporate Law (1995) and was Bar Examiner in 1988 in this field of law.

She was a recipient in 1998 of The Outstanding Women of the University of the Philippines Awards and an awardee in 2016 of the Filipina Women's Network (FWN) composed of acclaimed Filipina women leaders worldwide.

Kapunan has a weekly column in Business Mirror “Legally Speaking” and a regular Saturday teleradio program “Laban Para Sa Karapatan" (Fight for your Rights) 11-12 at DWIZ 882 AM radio.

She is a governor of the Philippine Red Cross, trustee and past president of the Women’s Business Council, Board of Adviser of World Wildlife Fund, legal adviser of Ballet Philippines and Towns Foundation Inc., past president of the Rotary Club of Sampaguita and past area director of Zonta International Foundation, among others.
