Tell it to SunStar: Women presidentiables in 2022

It may be too early to talk about the election one year ahead but it’s good to know who has the strong potential to serve the country during the post-pandemic period.

The 2022 presidential election will be a tough fight among formidable women candidates currently in public service at the local and national level. They come from different political parties with various backgrounds and experiences.

I don’t like to be partisan and one-sided but it pays to provide good and fair information without recommendation to people who can’t make a wise decision.

The first possible candidate is no other than the current Vice President Leni Robredo from Camarines Sur. She is the widow of former DILG secretary Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash on Aug. 18, 2012. She is obviously aspiring for the highest position in the land through her active charity work and constant criticism of the administration. With a strong political party backup she is a winnable candidate.

The second candidate is Senator Cynthia Villar who has a net worth of P3.8 billion. She is the wife of real property tycoon and former senator Manuel Villar. She may not be very popular at the moment but she has all the means and resources to run for the top post.

The third contender is Senator Grace Poe, the adopted daughter of Susan Roces and the late action star Fernando Poe Jr. She placed third in the last 2016 election but with the strong support of the past regime, the Catholic Church and the showbiz world it is not impossible for her to win.

Last but not least is Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, commonly known as “Inday Sara.” She is a lawyer and an experienced politician by profession. She is an army reservist with the rank of colonel. She is silent but she is a political force. In two years she shifted the power in the House “unseating and installing speakers” discreetly. The silent kingmaker is believed to be her father’s political heiress.

At the moment no politician is man enough to admit he has the interest to run for the presidency unless the boxer turned politician Senator Manny Pacquiao will decide. The good senator is qualified and has the heart and potential to run. If he accepts the challenge he could be the dark horse in the group and the thorn among roses. The year 2022 will be a very exciting and interesting election year in the country.
