Maric Gavino drops pandemic love song

THE past months have been tough for the majority of us. Everyone has been dealing with battles of anxiety, grief, sorrow and uncertainties brought by the pandemic. But if there’s one thing that kept most of us sane, at least for the majority, it’s music.

Dabawenyo engineer and singer-songwriter Maric Gavino is one of those who turned to music during this pandemic. After months of quarantine, he found a renewed interest and passion for music by composing and recording a new single, Kung Mabalik Na Ang Tanan, which he released on Monday evening, December 14, 2020.

We had a chance to talk with this budding artist on his journey while composing his new single, his pandemic realizations and how it is still possible to grow and love during these trying times.

SSD: Can you share with us a little backgrounder of your latest single?

Maric: This is my fourth single and I call it my "Pandemic Love Song" because of the song’s general theme. It is about two people who met each other in this time of pandemic and then eventually fell in love. The song also has parts where it reminds us what to do this pandemic, especially when going outside.

SSD: What made you decide to write this song?

Maric: Honestly, I lost interest in making music when the lockdown started. After how many months, I was able to finally go out and see the outside world again. Slowly, I regained interest. I was inspired again, felt love, and was able to come up with a song relating to what is happening now. I wrote this to let people know that love can still grow despite how bad the world is right now. I wrote this to end the year with love and hope that this pandemic will end soon.

SSD: How long did it take in writing this song?

Maric: I wrote this song for almost two months with pauses in between.

SSD: What keeps you going in songwriting?

Maric: Music is my escape from all the stresses of this world. I know that through sharing my songs, I get more motivated in life. I am happy when people recognize my song and share how they can relate to it. I am happy when they share that my song helped them through their bad times. Music fuels me.

SSD: Are you writing more songs?

Maric: I’m currently taking a rest, but I am planning to release my very first EP (extended play) soon.

SSD: How are you able to continue your passion for music while working as an engineer as your day job?

Maric: Actually, I feel so happy and honored that my company recognizes and appreciates my talent. From our heads to my workers, they all knew I write songs and they say they love it and that makes me so happy. It's like working as an engineer while keeping myself as an artist.

Maric’s “Kung Mabalik na ang Tanan” is now available on his Facebook and Youtube channel and will eventually be out on Spotify, Youtube Music and Apple Music on December 30.
