Zamboanga City receives P16-M Covid-19 response fund

THE Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC) of the Alsons Group of Companies has provided a boost to Zamboanga City’s campaign against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Engineer Jose Marie Torrejon, WMPC plant manager, said they turned over P16,078,066.27 in check to the city government to be used in Covid-19 response.

Torrejon said the check was received by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar and City Treasurer Romelita Candido in a simple turnover Wednesday afternoon, December 16, 2020, at City Hall.

The mayor said the amount represents the city's share in the electrification fund, reforestation and watershed management, health enhancement and environmental fund for use in the Covid-19 response.

Salazar said the funds represent the one centavo per kilowatt-hour that is allocated to the electrification fund through the Department of Energy.

Torrejon said the fund allocation complies with the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2201, which stipulates that the host communities and city will get a share of one centavo for every kilowatt-hour generated by power plants operating in its area.

The WMPC has maintained a 100-kilowatt diesel-fire plant in Sangali village, Zamboanga City.

The land-based power plant commenced operation in 1997.
