TWO people were killed after a landslide hit Barangay Cuatro de Agosto in Mahaplag, Leyte on early Saturday morning, December 19, 2020.

In a report from the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Eastern Visayas headquarters, the victims were identified as 67-year-old widow Evelina Laraño and 62-year-old housewife Juvilinda Milana.

Authorities also rescued Ryan Amos, 14, and a certain Godofredo Laraño Jr.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the region declared total closure of the Tacloban-Baybay south road along Barangay Cuatro De Agosto due to a road cut brought by the incessant rainfall from Tropical Depression Vicky.

According to the DPWH, the traveling public may use the alternate route Palo-Carigara-Ormoc road.

As of Saturday afternoon, field personnel of Southern Leyte District Engineering Office conducted maintenance activities, which include the clearing of fallen trees, declogging of drainage and dewatering of flooded areas.

DPWH said the Marabong Bridge along Burauen-La Paz Road in Barangay Moging in Burauen, Leyte is passable only to light vehicles “due to scoured slope protection at the left side of abutment.”

Field personnel also installed temporary barricades and safety cones while manning the traffic and continuously monitoring the bridge condition.

In Southern Leyte, a road slip was reported along Barangay Tubod in Silago.

As of Saturday morning, only one lane was passable in the said area.

The Panalian Bridge in Silago was not also passable due to the washed-out detour of the ongoing bridge rehabilitation project. (SunStar Philippines)
