Solon: Digging deep into our reasons for fitness

OWING to the coronavirus pandemic, the past few months have allowed me to reflect on fitness and health. I recall Abraham Maslow and his hierarchy of needs — every human has some basic needs — security, safety, food, shelter, water and rest. The next tier is our psychological needs. We need esteem and need belongingness and love in order to see some fulfillment in our lives. Last, and perhaps the highest tier, is self-actualization. That includes being able to innovate and perhaps, contribute greater to society.

Fitness and good health do have their place in our lives. Being fit and in good health contributes to our self-esteem, especially as these affect our mental and emotional health. Further, being in optimal health allows us to be the best version of ourselves.

This sounds like a selfish statement, but digging deeper, the best version of yourself is the one that’s best able to serve the people and perhaps, have a greater impact on the community. Being in decent health allows you to enjoy life to its fullest.

The Christmas season is a time for festivities, but it also allows us to reflect on the previous year and prepare for the year ahead. Perhaps, now more than ever, public health was placed in the spotlight and dominated the news cycles. We also got to reflect and dare I say, got fearful over our own health conditions.

The next year brings hope. We cannot control the past but we can control the future, our future health included.

Why is fitness important? Allow me to say, all of us are looking for meaning in the things we do. It makes us feel better, but more importantly being fit gives us the mental strength to say that we are capable and that we are striving to be better versions of ourselves. When we pursue fitness, we are in the process of self-actualization, as Maslow would say.

Next year, I hope that we all journey in fitness and health, and be the best versions of ourselves.
