CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno Wednesday, December 23, 2020, said that while he understood how condemnable heinous crimes are, death penalty is still not the solution.

"It's not as if that death penalty per se will deter commission of heinous crimes. Naay mga solution nga mas effective," Moreno said.

The renewed call to restore death penalty occurred following the murders of 55-year-old Sonya Gregorio and her 25-year-old son Frank Anthony Gregorio by a policeman in Paniqui, Tarlac.

"Kasabot ta ang heinous crimes are very condemnable. Katong nahitabo sa Paniqui, it was really cold murder," Moreno said.

The city mayor further said restoring death penalty does not prevent people from committing crimes, adding that there are several countries worldwide that have done away with death penalty.

"My position remains the same. Death penalty is not the answer to heinous crimes," Moreno said.
