CORONAVIRUS disease (Covid-19) killed a one-month-old baby in Eastern Visayas while it registered the highest single-day record of infections on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.
The Department of Health (DOH) in the region identified the fatality as patient EV-9682, a one-month-old male from Sta. Rita, Samar who died on December 19.
A total of 244 new cases were also recorded out of 1,472 laboratory samples tested in the three Covid-19 laboratories in the region.
The Eastern Visayas Regional Covid-19 Testing Center released a total of 1,125 laboratory results, of which 895 are negative and 230 are positive for Covid-19.
The results include 227 new cases, two reswabs and one reinfection, according to DOH.
Meanwhile, the Divine Word Hospital Virology Laboratory released a total of 328 laboratory results.
Of the results, 314 are negative and 14 are positive for the virus.
The Ormoc Molecular Diagnostic Center also released a total of 19 laboratory results, with three positive and 16 negative.
The 244 new confirmed cases are from Tacloban City (35); Ormoc City (3); Abuyog (1); Alang-alang (1); Baybay City (3); Barugo (3); Burauen (2); Carigara (10); Dulag (5); Jaro (3); Javier (1); Palo (6); Pastrana (1); Sta.Fe (3); Tabon-tabon (2); Tanauan (2); Tunga (1); Bontoc (1); Liloan (6); Maasin City (8); Silago (1).
Basey (8); Calbayog City (2); Catbalogan City (29); Marabut (1); Paranas (1); Pinabacdao (1); San Jose De Buan (4); Sta. Margarita (1); Sta.Rita (4); Talalora (1); Zumarraga (4); Borongan City (14); Giporlos (2); Guiuan (18); Maydolong (1); Oras (14); Quinapondan (1); Taft (3); Gamay (4); Mapanas (2); Palapag (11); Caibiran (2); Kawayan (1); Maripipi (1); and Naval (16).
Health experts earlier attributed the surge in Covid-19 infections to “community transmission exacerbated by the significant rise in mobility within and among provinces.”
As of Wednesday morning, the region’s total number of Covid-19 cases is at 10,456, with total recoveries at 9,463 (90.50 percent), total deaths at 118 (1.13 percent), and total active cases at 875 (8.37 percent). (SunStar Philippines)
