Samboan mayor, 88, dies of heart failure

SAMBOAN Mayor Emerito Sy Calderon Sr. passed away on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, due to heart failure. He was 88.

His son and Samboan Vice Mayor Emerito “Doc Tito” Calderon Jr. has assumed his father’s post.

The younger Calderon took oath as mayor before Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia at the Capitol on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020.

Just before he died, Calderon Sr. was on his second term as mayor of Samboan.

He is survived by his spouse Beatriz Durano Calderon, who was formerly a vice governor of Cebu and a former mayor of Samboan; and their six children: Marissa Jude Calderon-Alazas, Cebu’s 7th district Rep. Peter John Calderon, Samboan’s Association of Barangay Captains president Raymond Joseph Calderon, then Vice Mayor Emerito Emmanuel Calderon, Jr. and Atty. Emmeline Calderon-David, as well as his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

He represented the old fifth congressional district of Cebu during the 7th Congress. The district was then comprised of the towns of Alcantara, Alegria, Badian, Boljoon, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Moalboal, Oslob, Samboan and Santander.

Calderon Jr. committed to do his best to complete the programs and projects left behind by his father, and continue the legacy of leadership and service.

Calderon Sr. also served as the duly elected party-list representative of the Philippine Coconut Producers Federation (Cocofed) for two consecutive terms in the 12th and 13th Congresses.

During the Marcos dictatorship, Calderon Sr. was appointed Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications.

He was a lawyer by profession, an entrepreneur and a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Law Class of 1955. (JKV, PR)
