Solon: Starting 2021 with health

THE end of the year is always a time filled with reflection, and we all think of how we can better ourselves for the coming year. Most people’s New Year’s Resolutions are filled with some goals for health, either it’s to lose weight or exercise more. It’s also supposedly a time of the year where hordes enroll in gyms, only to fizzle out after a few weeks. Today, I’d like to start with advice on how to make those health and fitness resolutions last.

Start where you are

If you’re at the point where you can only run one kilometer, that’s fine. Start from there. Don’t get discouraged but make sure to build up your fitness over time. It’s unreasonable to run a marathon if you haven’t even run for more than 2km in the past few months.

Think marginal gains

We are a product of what we repeatedly do. Whatever our weight and our fitness levels are, these are a product of what we’ve been doing for the past few years. You are not going to reverse what you’ve done in the past five years over five weeks. So chillax. The key is to keep on doing sustainable habits that get you in the right direction. Every small thing you do counts toward your health. Each meal where you make the right choice, and every minute you exercise instead of staying on the couch counts toward helping you become the best version of yourself.

Get guidance

This is something that most people take for granted. Getting proper guidance helps keep us accountable, and makes our journey to health and fitness more efficient. Those who want to get fitter can consult a fitness coach. For those who want to eat healthier, a registered dietician can be a source of guidance. It’s always good to be in touch with someone who is a specialist in the goal we are looking to achieve.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The key is to make sure all those steps get you in the right direction. With what we’ve seen from 2020, we know that health really is a treasured wealth. How will you take care of your health next year? How will your loved ones benefit if you get yourself physically healthier?
