With everybody home during this holiday break, it’s a good time to binge on holiday flicks and spend some quality time with loved ones. Movie marathon time? Here are some classics and newcomers perfect for Christmas break:
“Home Alone” (1990) | Director: Chris Columbus
In this ‘90s classic, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind by his family and relatives, who are off to spend Christmas in Paris, and must defend himself and his home from two thieves. There are already five “Home Alone” movies (and another one in development), but nothing quite compares to the first, no?
“The Princess Switch” (2018) | Director: Mike Rohl
A baker from Chicago named Stacy (Vanessa Hudgens) flies to the fictional country of Belgravia for a competition and bumps into a could-be twin: Lady Margaret Delacourt, a duchess and fiancée of a prince. Longing for a brief escape, Margaret begs Stacy to switch lives temporarily. A sequel titled “The Princess Switch: Switched Again” was released last month.
“Klaus” (2019) | Director: Sergio Pablos
This critically-acclaimed 2D-animated comedy follows Jesper, a lazy postman-in-training stationed in a remote island town resided by two rival clans. There, he meets Klaus, a reclusive woodsman and talented toymaker, who tasks him with delivering his toys to children around town. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards.
“Shazam!” (2019) | Director: David F. Sandberg
In this DC Comics film adaptation, a troubled foster child named Billy is chosen by an ancient wizard named Shazam to be his new champion, granting him the ability to transform into the red-clad superhero by simply shouting his name. Funny, action-filled, and heart-warming, this seems like the perfect film to watch after a drought in the superhero genre this year.
“Krampus” (2015) | Director: Michael Dougherty
Who says you can watch only cheesy rom-coms and sappy family movies during Christmas? In this Christmas horror-comedy, a family is attacked by Krampus—a demonic entity from European folklore who is believed to punish misbehaving children—after one of the kids throws a fit and berates his family. Think Santa Claus, but evil and with horns.
“Last Christmas” (2019) | Director: Paul Feig
In this feel-good rom-com starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, Kate, a jaded employee at a year-round Christmas shop and aspiring singer in Central London, meets the charming yet mysterious Tom while at work. Initially, she finds him odd but eventually develops feelings for him as they spend more time together.
