Dilapidated white road ‘cause’ of floods, vehicular accidents

MORE THAN 100 garbage trucks going to and from the transfer station in Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City is the reason a portion of the White Road is in a dilapidated state.

It has been a year since Barangay Captain Kirk Bryan Repollo appeared before the City Council to ask for assistance but no action has been taken until now.

According to Repollo, White Road only needed some patching during that time. The situation, though, has changed and patching is no longer an option.

Around 500 meters of the 800-meter to one-kilometer road have been damaged, he said.

He said it would be better to fix the whole length of White Road, which is the only way garbage trucks can access the transfer station, Repollo said.

He said garbage trucks of different sizes and weight loads use the road.

Repollo said the damage to the road has contributed to flooding in the area and has even caused some vehicular accidents.

If the City cannot help, Repollo said the barangay and establishments in the vicinity will be forced to look for resources to address the problem.

The barangay captain said he already talked with owners of business establishments in the area and they agreed to send a letter to the City Government to raise the issue and to have a private contractor inspect the damage to determine the scope of work and funds.

In January this year, Repollo said the City included White Road on the list of roads that would be asphalted. However, he said he was later told that roads on the Sinulog route would be prioritized. Since then, White Road, which is under the City’s jurisdiction, has not been repaired.

In a previous report, City Engineer Kenneth Carmelita Enriquez said they still have to inspect roads that need repair so they can prepare budget estimates.

SunStar Cebu tried to reach Enriquez for an update, but to no avail. (JJL)
