Mandaue City Hall gives cash aid to residents of Paknaan affected by heavy October flooding

THE Mandaue City Government gave on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, financial assistance to 3,600 Barangay Paknaan residents who were affected by the heavy flooding last October.

Each of the residents received P1,000 during the distribution that took place at the barangay gym.

The City Treasurer’s Office and the City Social Welfare and Services spearheaded the event.

Last October, Butuanon River and Mahiga Creek swelled and caused flooding because of heavy rainfall and high tide. Residents living in barangays near these two bodies of water were affected after the flood damaged their houses.

Paknaan Barangay Malaquias Soco thanked the city government’s aid. He said they had received assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7 and the private sector.

In Paknaan, the seven flood-prone areas are Zones Sibuyas, Ahos, Talong, Batong, Kangkong, Sayote and Carrots.

Since the October heavy flooding, Soco said the barangay has yet to experience that kind of flooding during downpours.

Soco attributed this development to a riprap built in their barangay to prevent Butuanon River from spilling over to the barangay during a downpour.

The other flood-mitigating measure undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways is the dredging up of soil to deepen the river. (KFD)
