1,700 cases on first day of 2021 in Philippines

THE Philippines welcomed 2021 with over 1,700 newly confirmed coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases reported by the Department of Health (DOH) Friday, January 1.

Based on its case bulletin, 1,765 new Covid-19 cases were recorded Friday, bringing the country's total caseload to 475,820.

Areas with the highest number of cases are Davao City (100), Rizal (99), Cavite (71), Quezon City (70), and Manila City (69).

Of the confirmed cases, four more patients have succumbed to Covid-19.

As of 4 p.m. of January 1, the death toll was at 9,248. This also brought the case fatality rate in the country to 1.94 percent, said the DOH.

The health department also reported a total of 439,895 recoveries, including the 106 new Covid-19 survivors reported Friday. This means that 92.4 percent of the Covid-19 patients have been able to recover.

As to active cases, the DOH reported 26,677 and this accounts for 5.6 percent of the coronavirus infections in the country.

Of the active cases, 81.9 percent are mild cases, 9.8 percent are asymptomatic, 5.1 percent are critical, 2.7 percent are severe, and 0.44 percent are moderate cases. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
