Silay cop under probe for 'indiscriminate firing'

A POLICE officer assigned at the Silay City Police Station is under investigation for alleged indiscriminate firing during the New Year's Eve celebration.

The cop was identified as Police Executive Master Sergeant Renzie Lambayog, a resident of Pueblo San Antonio, Barangay Zone 12-A, Talisay City.

Talisay City Police Chief Jigger Gimeno said the complainant, who asked not to be identified, went to the Talisay City Police Station and claimed that Lambayog fired his weapon twice.

Gimeno said based on the complainant's claims, Lambayog's vehicle was blocking the road and the complainant used his own vehicle's car horn several times. A minor argument also ensued between Lambayog and the complainant.

Lambayog eventually gave way and parked his vehicle, but the complainant later returned to confront him again, which caused the cop to lose his cool and pull out his firearm and shot it in the air twice.

Talisay City police later arrived at the scene, but did not recover any fired cartridges. It is also unclear as to what type of firearm was used as there were no other witnesses except for the complainant's wife and child.

Lambayog, meanwhile, denied the allegations against him.

Because of the incident, the Talisay City Police Station sent a letter to Silay City police chief, Police Major Rollie Pondevilla.

The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo) spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Abegael Donasco, said they are also investigating the incident.

"There is no evidence yet that [Lambayog] did fire his firearm because there were no empty shells recovered in the scene," Donasco said.

She added that Lambayog is still reporting for duty at the Silay City Police Station.
