Gacad: 2021

WHEN the clock struck midnight on December 31, I don't think another Cinderella happened. I'm sure, though, that most everyone was waiting for the last zero in 2020 to change to 1 as it should.

Now, it is the year 2021 and 6 days into the new year, I'm still struggling whether the word happy in all the greetings is appropriate. We greeted everyone a happy 2020, too, and as it turned out, it wasn't really so, I guess.

Beauty, as they say, is in the eyes of the beholder. That being the case, then happy, or happiness, is also in the "eye" of the beholder. There are many take-aways from 2020 and some may argue that even if the situation wasn't "normal," there were still a lot of happy moments to look back to. I agree! So let me just be more optimistic and greet everyone a happy new year (na rin).

Vaccines, accordingly, will be the focus for the new year. Again, debates have come out as to efficacy, side-effects (or front effects, 'dba erap?), approvals, availability, special treatment, etc. Can't we just be happy that the world is making progress on this? Nothing is certain for sure, except again, change (so cliché). I'm scared to even think about what's going to happen next, when, where and how. Now there's a new strain that is reported to be more transmissible than the 2020 (or 2019) version. Ano 'yan upgrade? Despite these, the "basics" remain: God, love, family.....

If you're feeling anxious as to which way it's gonna go this year, don't worry, we all are. Maybe we just need to have and be with friends who truly love us, a family that cares, more positivity in our thoughts (and people around us), and a warm home to share all this positive energy with.

Don't worry.... be happy!

"Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within. It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellow and then ourselves." -- Helen Keller

"Live so that you are at ease, in harmony with the world and full of joy." -- Confucius

"Joy is not in things, it is in us. -- Richard Wagner

"True happiness must come from within you. You will find happiness by letting your conscience guide you -- listen to it; follow it. Your conscience is the key to your happiness." -- Karen Poynter Taylor

"Everybody, everywhere, seeks happiness, it's true; But finding it and keeping it seems difficult to do. Difficult because we think that happiness is found; Only in the places where wealth and fame abound. And so we go on searching in "palaces of pleasure," seeking recognition and monetary treasure. Unaware that happiness is just a state of mind, within the reach of everyone who takes time to be kind; For in making others happy we will be happy, too: For the happiness you give away returns to "shine on you." -- Helen Steiner Rice
