IT’S a new year again and, as usual, we take this as an opportunity to change our ways and to become better than we were for the previous year. We create new year’s resolutions to improve our relationship with our family, peers, and self. These new year’s resolutions sometimes touch our financial, physical, and mental needs.

And for some of us, we might have already started with our skincare regimen every morning and night and we wish to be more consistent this year. But with new year’s resolution, aside from being consistent, we want to do it the right way.

We’ve interviewed Kaye Garino, beauty guru and owner of Kayesthetics. She gave us helpful tips to consider when taking care of one’s skin in your 20s, while the skin is still younger. We hope these tips can give you a renewed perspective on taking care of one’s skin.

1. Cleanse, Moisturize, Protect

In our interview with Ms Kaye, she shares how skincare in your 20s shouldn’t be as complicated as one thinks especially for very mild skin conditions. She said there are only three steps that one needs to follow: cleanse, moisturize, and protect.

Kaye said it’s good to invest in a good facial cleanser. Personally, she said she follows the double cleansing - make-up cleanse at the end of the day followed by her trusted facial cleanser.

She also emphasized the importance of wearing sunscreen every day. This is regardless of the weather that day. Whether there’s sun outside or it’s gloomy, sunscreen is still a must to protect the skin. She recommends wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 35 and with UVA and UVB protection.

“Every day we are exposed to artificial UV rays from gadgets even if we don’t go out of the house. Sunspots accumulate as we age. So do not skip sunblock. Filipinos also absorb the sun’s rays differently. We’re really prone to sunburn,” said Kaye.

When applying skincare products, one must also remember to apply on the neck and the shoulder area as the start of skin aging gets more apparent in the neck area.

2. Stop scrubbing too much

The scrub we usually know is those that come with granules and sandy consistency. Depending on one’s skin type, Kaye suggests also consider chemical exfoliants - those that do not have rough texture but still do the same purpose of exfoliating the skin. Examples of these are glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid among others.

Scrubbing, she said, must only be done in moderation - around once a week.

3. Mind your food intake and hydration

No matter how expensive and thorough your skincare regimen steps are if you do not watch the food you eat and your water intake, it will still reflect on your skin.

“Food intake and drinking a lot of water is still much more important than your skincare routine. If not given proper attention, this may result in dry skin or breakouts. I have clients who sometimes wonder why skincare products do not work for them. So I tell them maybe it’s not the skincare that’s the problem, maybe it’s their diet or food intake,” said Kaye.

She advises to regularly drink lots of water throughout the day to retain the internal moisture of the skin.

4. Rejuvenating skincare set should be used in moderation, and not as skin care maintenance

Kaye notes that the most common skincare products for the 20s are the rejuvenating set from different brands. This is because they are the most accessible and affordable in the market. She said as much as there is a need to rejuvenate now and then, one must remember that rejuvenating sets are not made for long-term skincare maintenance.

Some rejuvenating products have peeling effects on the skin and are not good if applied to the skin on a regular basis. She advises that rejuvenating should be done with a two to thee-month interval. During the interval phase, one must only do the simple cleanse, moisturize, and protect procedure before doing the rejuvenating again.

“Too much rejuvenation or too much peeling ages the skin faster. It must be done in moderation,” said Kaye who added that one must also consider very mild products for the skin but would still assure the same good results.
