Agro-fishery losses climb to P78M

THE damage caused by massive flooding brought about by heavy rains with strong winds to agro-fishery sector of Negros Occidental has increased to about P78 million.

For the January 8 to 11 flash floods alone, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) had reported almost P52.8 million in losses.

The figure covers P37.5 million worth of damage and production losses to the province's rice sector.

Some 1,642 farmers with a combined areas of 1,574.49 hectares in 65 barangays of Sagay City, Cadiz City, Manapla, Talisay City, Silay City, Valladolid, Pontevedra and Bago City were affected.

Incurring the second-highest amount of damage and production losses, at P8.17 million, is the high-value crops (HVC) sector.

The OPA recorded 281 farmers of 24.44-hectare farms in nine barangays of cities of Escalante, Cadiz, Talisay and Silay.

The corn sector incurred about P1.12 million worth of damage. The amount covers 58 affected farmers with 49.2 hectares in 15 barangays of Sagay City.

For irrigation, the flooding damaged diversion dams and intake structure in Silay City and E.B. Magalona amounting to P111,000. At least 103 farmers were affected.

In terms of fisheries, the amount of damage has reached almost P5.85 million.

Reports further showed that 88 fishermen in 26 barangays of Talisay City, E.B. Magalona and Sagay City, Cadiz City and San Carlos City were hit.

About 989 units of their fishing gears like motorized banca, fish cage, lift net, fyke net, shallow water fish corral and oyster raft, among others were damaged while 149.183-hectare ponds were affected.

During the first flooding last January 1, the OPA reported almost P17 million worth of losses to crops and fisheries.

Adding to the amount of damage is that for the livestock and poultry sector, totaling P8.6 million.

The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) earlier reported that for the flooding on January 8 to 11, the sector incurred P5.14 million worth of losses.

The amount covers animal raisers in 66 barangays of cities of Escalante, Sagay, Talisay, Silay, Victorias, Bago and La Carlota, and towns of E.B. Magalona, Pulupandan, Pontevedra, San Enrique and Valladolid.

During the flash floods on New Year's day, the PVO reported about P3.5 million worth of damage and losses covering animal raisers in 12 barangays of cities of Talisay and Victorias.

Affected animals included gamefowl, swine, free-range chicken, native chicken, duck and goat, among others.
