WHILE other provinces and cities in the country have been allowed to hold fiesta-related activities, it’s being foreseen that for the second year in a row, the much-anticipated Sugat Kabanhawan Festival in Minglanilla town will once again be suspended.

This was announced by Minglanilla Mayor Elanito Peña on Jan. 20, 2021.

Peña said with the existing threat of Covid-19, it’s better to put the health and safety of the public first and forgo their annual Sugat Kabanhawan festivities.

“For me, we shouldn’t hold it as we don’t have the vaccine yet. But even if the vaccine is already available, we will still have to observe the result,” said Peña.

However, Peña assured that once things are back to normal and gatherings are allowed, their annual festival will push through but still in compliance with government protocol.

“My message to all Minglanilla residents is that for now, we will have to cancel our Sugat, but hopefully next year, we can hold it again,” Peña said.

Based on the latest data from the municipality, it recorded 26 active cases. Since the start of the pandemic, Minglanilla has 679 confirmed cases, which include 621 recoveries and 32 deaths.

The Sugat Kabanhawan Festival, held on Easter Sunday, was also canceled due to the threat of Covid-19 after Minglanilla was one of the areas in Cebu placed under enhanced community quarantine due to a high number of Covid-19 cases.

The municipality of Minglanilla is the second town south of Cebu and is known as the “Sugat Capital of Cebu.”
