Mandaue to ask Cebu City to allow entry of traditional jeepneys

THE Mandaue City Council will appeal to the Cebu City Government to allow the entry and passage of traditional public utility jeepneys (TPUJ) plying their previous routes.

The council approved a resolution on January 20, 2021 authored by Mandaue City Councilor Jimmy Lumapas, the chairman of Public Transportation, regarding the matter.

In an interview, Hyll Retuya, chief-of-staff of Lumapas, said they received a request letter from the Mandaue Transport Cooperative that some TPUJ drivers in Mandaue City entering Cebu City were apprehended and given a citation as the Cebu City Government has yet to allow jeepneys in its streets.

He said some apprehended TPUJ drivers have surrendered their licenses for such violation.

But Retuya said that last year, the tri-cities have an agreement to allow TPUJs from the respective cities to ply within the tri-cities as long as they have complied with the necessary requirements from Land Transportation Office and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Next week, Lumapas will personally deliver the resolution to appeal and discuss with the Cebu City Government regarding the request of the Mandaue Transport Group to allow entry and passage of TPUJ from Mandaue City to Ayala Mall, Country Mall, and Manalili, Cebu City. (KFD)
