Villaflor: United and Pogba

Footnote

SINCE its 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Nov. 2, 2020, Manchester United has remained unbeaten in the English Premier League.

The club’s latest win came at the expense of Fulham, which was handed a 2-1 defeat at home Thursday, Jan. 21.

Then dismissed as a goner early in the season, head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned things remarkably for the Red Devils.

Since the loss at Old Trafford, United has amassed 10 wins with only three draws against Manchester City, Leicester City and Liverpool, all of which, incidentally, are in the top four of the league, in that order.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes and striker Edinson Cavani propped up United early on with crucial goals, with forwards Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford also finding the back of the net.

Of late, though, the versatile midfielder Paul Pogba has drawn praise from Solskjaer, saying the Frenchman simply can play anywhere.

This was after Pogba scored an incredible goal from outside the penalty area to secure the 2-1 win against Fulham.

Fulham had drawn first blood in the fifth minute, but Cavani equalized 16 minutes later.

Then Pogba weaved his magic from the most unlikely of places.

Dribbling past defenders from the right just beyond the edge of the box, Pogba aimed for the far post and sent the perfectly struck ball scorching past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Just last season, Pogba missed plenty of football action due to a spate of injury and illness, his future at the club already uncertain.

But with Pogba’s recent turnaround in form and mentality, so have United’s fortunes changed.

Now enjoying his football and finding his groove, Pogba will play a crucial role in creating opportunities for his teammates up front.

If Pogba and the rest of the Red Devils keep their solid run of form until season’s end, this would be bad news for the Premiership clubs making chase.

Solskjaer and United fans, though, won’t mind.
