Nietes, Pagara to fight in Dubai on April 3

FOUR-DIVISION world champion Donnie Nietes and super bantamweight prospect Albert Pagara are seeing action together in Dubai, UAE on April 3 in the third show of the "Dubai Fight Series" promoted by D4G Promotions in association with Round 10 Boxing Club and MTK Global.

The 38-year-old Nietes could be in the last few years of his storied boxing career. However, he still has a lot left in his tank.

Nietes has been whipping himself back into fighting form along with young talents at the Villamor Brothers Boxing Gym for his ring return after a two-year hiatus.

Nietes last fought on December 12, 2018, wherein he captured his fourth division crown after beating Kazuto Ioka by split decision in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight contest at the Wynn Palace Cotai in Macau.

After winning the belt, Nietes was ordered to defend his title against fellow Filipino Aston Palicte in a rematch. He didn't like the idea of fighting a Filipino again and was looking at bigger fights against the likes of Roman Gonzalez, Juan Francisco Estrada and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. He eventually decided to relinquish his belt, which resulted in a long hiatus.

Nietes is considered one of the best fighters in boxing's lower weight classes. He's a world champion at 105, 108, 112 and 115 pounds. He hopes to get another shot at a world title before he calls it a career.

Nietes is 42-1-5 with 23 knockouts.

Meanwhile, Pagara last fought in 2020. He beat veteran Virgil Puton by unanimous decision in an eight-rounder in one of the fights of Omega Pro Sports International's two-part boxing show last December 18, 2020.

The 26-year-old Pagara is brimming with talent and still could be a future world beater.

Pagara hit a snag in his promising boxing career after suffering an eighth round knockout in the hands of Cesar Juarez in 2016 in San Mateo, California. Pagara has won seven straight fights since then.

Pagara is 33-1 with 23 knockouts.

The opponents of Nietes and Pagara will be announced by D4G Promotions soon.

Following the closure of ALA Promotions in 2020, Nietes and Pagara signed with MTK Global and D4G Promotion. (EKA)
