Former Southwestern University-Phinma high school standout Cyrus Baguio has retired from the PBA, ending a colorful 17-year career that saw him win three titles and play for the Philippine national team.

Baguio, who hails from Iligan City, started to make a name for himself here in Cebu when he played high school basketball for the Southwestern University-Phinma Baby Cobras. After high school, the high-leaping guard transferred to the University of Santo Tomas before being drafted 14th overall by Red Bull in the star-studded 2003 PBA Rookie Draft.

NLEX official Ronald Dulatre and his longtime agent, Danny Espiritu, confirmed the Baguio’s retirement.

The 40-year old was signed to a contract extension by the Road Warriors right before the 2020 Philippine Cup, which was going to serve as his swan song. However, it didn’t go as planned the Covid-19 pandemic struck, forcing the league to stage the Philippine Cup inside a bubble setting.

Baguio opted not to play, citing personal reasons.

Baguio walks away from the pro ranks with one title with Red Bull and two with the Alaska Aces. He was also named co-Finals MVP of the 2010 Fiesta Cup.

One of the highlights of Baguio’s storied career was his participation in the Philippine team that competed in the 2009 FIBA Asian Men’s Championship in Tianjin, China.

Baguio was also named to the Mythical Second Team twice and was the 2008 Most Improved Player. He also won the 2010 Samboy Lim Sportsmanship award, copped the slam dunk title in 2004, and was named an All-Star a whopping 11 times. (JNP)
