PH broadband now faster, cheaper, more affordable than global average

GLOBE’s continuous efforts to improve its network performance over the years have resulted in faster and more affordable internet services for its broadband customers.

Since 2016, the prices per gigabyte (GB) of all Globe broadband services such as Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi, wired Globe At Home Postpaid and Globe at Home Postpaid LTE have gone down by more than 60 percent in the last four years.

From as high as P26 per GB, Globe At Home Postpaid LTE price has gone down to P9 per GB over the last two years or a 65.38 percent price decrease. Likewise, for Globe at Home Prepaid WiFi, Globe’s most affordable and loadable internet for the masses, customers now pay only P9 per GB from as high as P23 in 2017; P15 in 2018; and P10 in 2019 or a decrease of 60.87 percent since 2017.

Globe At Home wired customers, on the other hand, now have unlimited data access compared to paying up to P13 per GB in 2016.

Alongside the improvement in prices is the improvement in average download speeds in the country.

Based on the results of tests taken with Speedtest®, the Philippines’ internet average download speed for fixed broadband increased by 86 percent and 62 percent for mobile broadband, compared to 2017 speeds. The country’s average download speed for fixed broadband continues to improve from 14.36 Mbps (2016) to 26.69 Mbps (2020), while average download speed for mobile broadband also improved from 9.68 Mbps (2016) to 15.72 Mbps (2020).

“We will continue to focus on improving the internet experience of our customers. Our investments in our wireless and fixed broadband networks are now making a significant impact in connecting more households and more areas in the country. Without a doubt, our broadband service is now more accessible and affordable. As we continue to build new sites and connect more people, our country will soon be at par with our Asian neighbors,” said Darius Delgado, head of Broadband Business at Globe.

In a survey done by Cable.co.uk, the Philippines ranked 18th out of 42 Asian countries in terms of average cost of broadband at $0.75 per megabit per month. The country likewise ranked 14th out of 35 Asia Pacific countries, and 18th out of 42 Asian countries.

The survey also indicated that the average price of broadband in the Philippines is way below the global average among 211 countries measured. The average cost of broadband packages in the PH is reported to be at $53.71, far lower than the global average cost of broadband packages at $78.14.

Globe has laid out a three-pronged strategy to improve data experience including aggressive cell site builds; upgrading all cell sites to 4G/LTE; and fast-tracking the fiberization of Filipino homes nationwide.
