Meng eyes Zambo for atomweight crack

FRESH from a win in Singapore, Chinese prospect Meng Bo wants a crack at the No. 1 ranked atomweight Denice Zamboanga.

The 24-year-old Meng believes that she can beat Zamboanga and become the mandatory challenger of ONE Championship Women’s atomweight champion Angela Lee, who’s still in hiatus because of her pregnancy.

“That would be more than enough to earn a shot at the world title. Once I get Denice in the Circle and beat her, I will be ranked No. 1 in my division, and I’ll be next in line to fight the champion,” said Meng.

Meng and Zamboanga were supposed to fight in 2020 but their fight was scrapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We were supposed to fight last year, but Covid happened and it was cancelled. I couldn’t fly to Singapore at that time,” said Meng. “But I must say, Denice was lucky that fight got cancelled. If we were in the ring together, without a shadow of doubt, I would beat her up and take her spot as the #1 ranked atomweight in the division.”

Meng just came off a unanimous decision win over Brazilian Samara Santos last Jan. 22, 2021 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

The 24-year-old Zamboanga, on the other hand, fought two times last year, beating Mei Yamaguchi by unanimous decision and stopping Watsapinya Kaewkhong via an Americana in the first round.

Zamboanga, a native of Quezon City, is 8-0, while Meng, the No. 2 rated atomweight, is 17-5.

“I think my stand up fighting techniques will be enough to give me the victory. I’m pretty confident that I can finish Denice with a flurry of punches and knock her out within two rounds,” said Meng.

Meng and Zamboanga could be on a collision course against each other because both are expected to be included in the roster of fighters for the ONE Atomweight Grand Prix later this year. The winner of the tournament will face Lee for the ONE Women’s atomweight belt. (EKA)
