Extortion seen as motive for North Cotabato blast

INVESTIGATORS are looking at extortion as motive for the explosion in North Cotabato on Wednesday, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas said on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Sinas said there were reports that the Alkhobar Group, a local crime organization, threatened to bomb the Yellow Bus Line (YBL) company if it fails to pay up.

Sinas said he has ordered the Soccsksargen Police Regional Office to assist the local police in the conduct of an investigation on the incident.

A 53-year old woman was killed while at least five others were wounded when a bomb exploded in the passengers’ waiting shed near the YBL ticketing booth in Barangay Cajelo in Tulunan on Wednesday afternoon, January 27, 2021.

The explosion occurred as a YBL bus stopped by the shed to unload passengers. All the bus passengers were unhurt but the back of the bus was slightly damaged.

Soccsksargen Police Director Michael John Dubria said they were not discounting the possibility that another terrorist group was behind the attack. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)
