HUNDREDS of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) in Iloilo City will be trained on Better Health Programme (BHP) Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Prevention and Control initiatives.
This, after Elizabeth Bautista, advisor at British Embassy Manila, and BHP country technical lead Rogelio Ilagan, wrote Mayor Jerry Treñas about the development.
Under UK Prosperity Fund, BHP Philippines is committed to building the skills of workforce to prevent and manage NCD diseases by working with the City Health Office and a Local Learning Network for NCDs through West Visayas State University College of Medicine.
BHP seeks to address the growing burden of NCDs such as heart disease and diabetes.
"In 2021, based on the Annual Operating Plan, BHP will assist Iloilo City to train some 300 barangay health workers on hypertension and other NCDs; update current NCD courses, especially for hypertension; and help set up an NCD digital portal in the city to promote more attention and build the digital competency of health staff to deliver online learning," Ilagan said.
"It will also develop new online training courses on mental health and train 20 trainers in the health sector; and arrange for mentoring and collaborative research relationships between Iloilo and UK institutions, such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine," he added. (PR)
