2 more rebels surrender in Eastern Visayas

TWO more alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to authorities in Eastern Visayas on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

Alias Peddy, who has a standing warrant of arrest dated April 27, 2010, for attempted murder, surrendered in San Jorge, Samar.

The former rebel was allegedly assigned as the vice squad leader of Squad Linog from 1987 to 1995.

Authorities said alias Peddy “wanted to live a normal life, embrace the program of the government... and be cleared from any derogatory record.”

A former squad member of sub-regional committee Emporium identified as alias Rex also surrendered in Lavezares, Northern Samar.

He turned in one unit Caspian caliber. 45 with serial number 529964 and one magazine with six live ammunition, according to police regional command in a report.

The surrender of alias Peddy and alias Rex came following the surrender of two alleged rebel members, alias Rolly and Alias Ester, on February 2.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police said it has stepped up its fight against insurgency and criminality in the region with the additional deployment of 226 elite commandos from its Special Action Force.

Eastern Visayas remained a hotbed of insurgency with the continued presence of the NPA, which has been listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. (SunStar Philippines)
