Viray: The council race is wide open

A QUITE number of our city councilors are to complete their terms by 2022. That means they are disqualified to run having completed the three term limit.

The following aldermen are prohibited to seek reelection:

l) BJ "Tiger" Lagman -- BJ is a sure winner in the councilor's darling if he were qualified. Remember that in the last elections, he topped the contest despite the non-support of the Iglesia votes;

2) Tino Dizon -- Tino's resources in reaching voters are beyond question. He has steady support from the 35 barangays of the city;

3) Nelson Lingat -- Nelson is a veteran of the council, having served for so many years. His experience in local legislation has given a built in edge among those who wish to barge in the winning circle;

4) Arvee Quiwa -- was a fresh face in the council. How time flies -- He is set to "graduate" after nine years.

There are councilors who may opt to run in higher positions.

l) It is almost certain that Councilor Raul Macalino is set to return to the Pampanga Provincial Board;

2) There are talks that Boboy "Pogi" Carreon is set to launch his candidacy for vice-mayor;

3) Dein Henson may concentrate in the mayoral campaign of his father (Rosve). He may sacrifice his reelection to the council.

The remaining councilors that may run for reelection are:

l) Tina David -- the well loved capitana is a shoo-in to be a councilor anew;

2) Reden Halili "Yan si Daddy: sighs daughter, Sheena. This is a winning slogan of Reden in previous elections. He would surely be in the winner's circle;

3) Ato Agustin maybe an old timer in the Council but, this is only his second term, having run and lost in the vice-mayor race to Jimmy Lazatin in 2016. He returned to the council in 2019.

Summary

Four of the 10 councilors are disqualified to run.

Three of the 10 councilors may opt to higher position or help their kin in the next elections.

Only three are certain to run for re-election, Ato Agustin, Tina and Reden. We will see no less than "seven" new faces, a boon to all wannabees.
