Heavy flooding hits Eastern Visayas towns

HEAVY overnight rainfall brought massive flooding in some towns in Eastern Visayas Wednesday, February 10, 2021.

Lieutenant Colonel Ma. Bella Rentuaya, spokesperson of Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas, said some 551 evacuation centers were established after the flood hit 44 barangays in the region.

In Leyte province alone, authorities rescued 53 individuals as major rivers and creeks overflowed its banks.

At least two persons were reportedly injured while 350 others were stranded.

No confirmed casualties were reported during the incident.

In Palo town, Mayor Ann Petilla suspended classes in all levels and work in government offices due to the flood.

The Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas, through the Office of Regional Community Affairs Development Division, conducted "Libreng Sakay" to the stranded individuals and families in Palo and Sta. Fe towns.

"As a response to the ongoing weather disturbance in our area, I have mandated all units to remain alert and assist in disaster-preparedness measures or possible evacuation, if the situation so warrants. I am also appealing to the public to undertake necessary preparations while still adhering to our Covid-19 health protocols,” said Brigadier General Ronaldo De Jesus, police regional director.

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, flooded areas were reported in Barangay 1 and 2 of Jipapad, Eastern Samar; Barangays Candoros, Barobo, Magtino of Llorente, Eastern Samar; Barangay Impo, San Andres, Bahay, Santol, Likay, Malaguinabot, and Capilihan of San Miguel, Leyte; Barangay Zone 1,2,3,4, Pilit, Tibak, Milagrosa, Badjangay, San Isidro, Gapas, San Miguelai, Bulo, Katipunan, and Victoria of Sta Fe; Barangay San Juaqiun, Cabarasan, Guti, Cangumbang, Gacao, Canhidok, Tacuranga, Libertad, San Antonio, Capirawan, Buri, Cavite East, San Miguel, and Cogon of Palo; and Barangay V and G Phase 1 and 5, Calanipawan road going to Caibaan, 82, Marasbaras, and Villa Dolina Subdivision of Tacloban City.
