Korean space blockbuster Space Sweepers on Netflix

From rom-com to horror, South Korea has been knocking it out of the park lately with its TV series and movies—in whatever genre it may be—and there seems to be no sign of stopping anytime soon.

Next up on streaming platform Netflix is “Space Sweepers,” a sci-fi space opera film, proving that the East Asian nation is truly a force to be reckoned with in the realm of showbiz and filmmaking.

Set in 2092, in a world where the Earth is no longer habitable and humans are forced to live in outer space, the film follows a group of misfits aboard the spaceship Victory, who comb through space to salvage debris.

In one of their excursions, they find a seven-year-old human-like robot girl who is currently wanted by UTS Space Guards. Seizing an opportunity in their discovery, the crew decide to take the girl and plan to have her exchanged for ransom.

Directed by Jo Sung-hee (“Phantom Detective,” “A Werewolf Boy”), the action-packed outer space adventure flick stars Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu, Yoo Hae-jin and Richard Armitage. This is regarded as the first Korean space blockbuster.
