(UPDATED) THE chemical section of a paint factory in Pilit, Barangay Cabancalan in Mandaue City was destroyed in an early morning fire today, Feb. 11, 2021.

Firefighters received the alarm at 2:37 a.m. The alarm was raised to level 3.

As of press time, at least eight hours since the fire alarm, firefighters continue to put out the fire.

According to CInsp. Nelson Ababon, the fire has been “confined” within the compound of the warehouse of Treasure Island Industrial Corp. He assured it will not spread to and destroy neighboring structures.

He said they are having difficulty putting out the fire because of the chemical makeup of the paints found in the warehouse. This prompted them to use aqueous film-forming foam instead.

“The other sections of the plant are unaffected. We are currently and closely working with local authorities to control and extinguish the fire. As of press time, there are no reported injuries,” said Treasure Island Industrial Corp in a statement published on its Facebook page.

John Eddu Ibañez, executive secretary of Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, said that residents living within the 20-meter radius of the fire have been directed to evacuate. (SunStar Cebu/With KFD, JOB)
