Good business Feng Shui

AS WE usher in the Chinese New Year, we see reports and features on what to do and observe for good luck in the coming year of the metal ox: fruits on the table, ampaos (red packets) with money in a bowl of uncooked rice, boiled eggs, coins on the windowsills, pineapple charms, and many other trinkets and practices for good luck.

We are all aware that the past year has been quite a nightmare for all of us, what with Covid-19 radically changing life as we know it for almost an entire year...and counting.

Being with the agency tasked primarily with registration and monitoring of corporations and partnerships, we have seen businesses struggle and cope with the current pandemic -- a considerable number had to close shop, and others had no choice but to suspend operations.

But notable in our day-to-day operations is that trait we Filipinos are greatly known for: resilience.

True, many companies have pulled the plug on their business operations. The lull in most businesses, especially those critically-impacted by the declared quarantine protocols, have caused irreversible losses which constrained their management to cease operations altogether. But surprisingly, we have also been witnesses to many companies coping and devoting their remaining resources to businesses that have become more relevant and more profitable due to the pandemic. Many corporations have caused amendment of their articles of incorporation to change business purposes to industries whose goods and services are very much in demand nowadays: delivery and errand services, online selling especially for food deliveries and groceries, internet services and related installations, computer units and accessories, among others. Others have chosen to relocate their principal offices to residences, realizing the need to stay at home for safety purposes, without sacrificing the quality of work and services related to their business, plus the fact that this practice would also save them a considerable amount in terms of office monthly rentals. Surprisingly, a good number of corporations have also increased their capital with infusion from current and new stockholders and business partners so as to sustain the business and add new industries and services. There is also a notable increase in foreign investments, as more and more foreign investors recognize, and acknowledge, the resilient Filipino spirit -- the ability to stay afloat and be resourceful especially during tough times.

Indeed, both big businesses and budding entrepreneurs may be observant of Feng Shui practices not only during Chinese new year celebrations but throughout the year, but ultimately -- luck is still what we make it.

Good business sense, the ability to adapt to difficult situations, good governance practices and due consideration for our workforce: these are more effective tools for good vibes in business.

For our part, there is continuous adoption of guidelines and measures to help business companies cope with the effects of Covid-19, which we have started since the pandemic hit, in keeping with our Bayanihan laws.

And of course, there is no harm in still observing those Feng Shui traditions.
