AN AWARD-winning independent filmmaker from Abra is making more efforts to promote the Tingguians, the Indigenous People of the province.
From making documentaries and short films about the tribe, Sine Abreño founder director Dexter Macaraeg came up with the project dubbed "Sine Abreño Interviews: Tingguians 101," which is being featured online.
Macaraeg said the event, which started on February 10, is Sine Abreño's contribution to the celebration of National Arts Month this February, which is also being promoted by theNational Commission for Culture and the Arts.
"Samahan ninyo ako dito sa Sine Abreño Interviews. I am really excited to be bringing something new to you all. It has something to do with my love for Cordilleran culture and the arts," Macaraeg added.
In the interviews proud Tingguian, Dr. Joey M. Dela Cruz, the Dean of Graduate School of Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (Asist) and past President of Gumil Filipinas (Abra Chapter) shared thatTinguian means "the people of the mountains," and it was originally used to refer to all mountain dwelling people.
"The Itneg people also known as Tingguian, an Austronesian ethnic group live in the mountainous area of Abra in Northwestern Luzon who descended immigrants from Kalinga, Apayao, and the Northern Kankanaey," he said.
Sine Abreño Interviews also features Dr. Maria Teresa B. Beñas, president of Gumil Filipinas (Abra Chapter) Bangued, Abra who emphasized on the remarkable contribution of the tribe which has 11 sub tribes, in the arts, culture, and tradition.
