246 hogs culled in 2 ASF-affected barangays in Cagayan de Oro

A TOTAL of 246 pigs owned by 68 swine raisers in Barangays Mambuaya and San Simon in Cagayan de Oro were depopulated as a mitigating measure to curb the spread of the animal virus, the City Veterinary Office reported.

Around 69 hogs of 24 swine raisers were culled on Wednesday night, February 10, in Barangay Mambuaya hours after the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Northern Mindanao confirmed African Swine Fever (ASF) cases in four different barangays in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro.

The aforementioned ASF-affected barangays are Barangay Jampason, Initao and Barangay Pajawan, Manticao in Misamis Oriental, and Barangays Mambuaya and San Simon in Cagayan de Oro.

The hogs, according to the City Veterinary Office, are within the 100-meter radius from the red zone or the where the pig mortalities were recorded.

The culled pigs and other materials used during the stamping off were buried to the identified burial site in the isolated area of Barangay Mambuaya.

On Thursday night, February 11, 177 pigs from 44 affected backyard hog raisers were culled in Barangay San Simon. The pigs were within the 500-meter radius from the red zone.

The DA-Northern Mindanao Regional Office said the agriculture department will provide an indemnity fund of P5,000 per culled hog to the 68 affected swine raisers. The City Government will also give P2,000 as compensation.

City Veterinarian Dr. Lucien Anthony Acac urged the hog raisers to follow the measures imposed, such as implementing no movement of animals to and from the affected barangays.

Strict animal checkpoints were also imposed, particularly in the hinterland barangays, to prevent the spread of the ASF on other nearby barangays.
