Virtual Dia de Zamboanga events set amid pandemic

THIS year’s celebration of the 84th “Dia de Zamboanga” will be marked by key events held virtually due to the restrictions on mass gathering amid the health pandemic.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said the city government is preparing for the line-up of activities set to commemorate the 84th Dia de Zamboanga on February 26.

The Dia de Zamboanga marks this city’s charter anniversary and the historic moment when the very first set of city officials, led by Mayor Nicasio Valderoza, was sworn into office February 26, 1937.

The Dia de Zamboanga, observed every February 26, is a special non-working holiday celebrated with scores of activities such as food and film festivals, photo exhibits, cheer dance competitions and the annual grand civic-military parade.

Salazar said among the main events being prepared for the Charter Day celebration are the Local Achievers Award (February 26), the Zoom In: Inter-Barangay Vlog Competition (February 26), and the Dia de Zamboanga Photography Competition 2021 (February 22 to 28, exhibit; February 26, awarding of winners).

The mayor said the main program for the celebration will be a virtual commemoration to be broadcasted on her and the local government's official social media pages at 8 a.m. on February 26.

She said the additional activities will also include the Dia de Zamboanga Exhibit (February 20 to 28), Zamboanga Idol 2021 (February 20, auditions; February 27, finals), SEIMBRA: 1st Zamboanga Horticultural Festival 2021 (February 22 to 28), Dia de Zamboanga Golf tournament (February 27 to 28), and Dia de Zamboanga Airsoft Practical Shoot Fest competition (February 28).
