THE renovation of Plaza Libertad will pave the way for an assembly area in front of City Hall.
This, after Mayor Jerry Treñas, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, councilors, and City Government officials led the groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of Plaza Libertad last February 4.
The first phase of the rehabilitation covers some 4,000 square meters of the plaza, which includes the assembly area fronting City Hall, pathways, drainage system, electrical lines, lighting system and plaza signages.
Targeted to finish by end of 2021, the project costs more than P19 million, which is funded under the Local Government Support Fund Assistance to Cities of the Department of Budget and Management.
The initiative aims to provide a sustainable public space for the Ilonggos.
"With our desire to bring Iloilo City to the next level, we maximize our potentials to create a better environment for our people and the plans are developing open spaces and building infrastructure projects that will benefit our community," Treñas said.
"If we continue to support one another, we can have more projects which are beneficial. We can altogether build a modern and sustainable environment," he added.
Architect Regina Gregorio assured that no additional trees in the plaza will be cut down during construction works.
Also, soon to rise adjacent to the City Hall area are the legislative building and multi-level parking structure, with groundbreaking rites expected before the end of February. (PR)
