NPA rebel surrenders in Samar

A FORMER member of the New People’s Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to the 1st Samar Provincial Mobile Force Company following his desire “to rebuild his loyalty to the government,” a top police official in the province said Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Colonel Glenn Oliver Cinco, director of Samar Police Provincial Office (SPPO), identified the surrenderer as alias Mayo, 34, a resident of Calbayog City.

The rebel also turned in one caliber .38 revolver marked Smith and Wesson with five refilled ammunition.

“This continuous surrender of communist terrorist group members with the Philippine National Police is a clear manifestation of the effectiveness of the ‘whole-of-nation approach’ to end insurgency,” said Cinco.

In a statement, SPPO said alias Mayo “wanted to live a normal life with his loved ones.”

Eastern Visayas, particularly the Samar Island, remains a hotbed of insurgency with the continued presence of the NPA. (SunStar Philippines)
