DESPITE the reported high demand for construction jobs amid the pandemic, over 6,000 construction workers nationwide lost their jobs in January 2021, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The latest job displacement report showed that 6,151 construction workers were displaced from January 1 to 31.

The department earlier identified the construction sector as one of the employment generating sectors despite the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Second in the list is service activities with 4,919 displaced workers.

A high number of displaced workers were from the administrative and support service sector (2,663) and manufacturing sector (2,622).

Other displaced workers were from the accommodation and food service activities (1,368); wholesale, retail, and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (1,295); information and communication (1,231); and arts, entertainment, and recreation (1,013).

The workers lost their jobs after employers implemented retrenchment, temporary closures, permanent closures and flexible work arrangements. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
