P300,000 smuggled cigarettes seized

OPERATIVES of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) have seized some P300,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes in an east coast village of the city, a top official said.

Police Colonel Rexmel Reyes, ZCPO director, said the smuggled cigarettes were seized around 6:40 p.m. Sunday, February 21, in Sitio Balinsungay in Mercedes village, 9.82 kilometers east of city hall.

Reyes said the policemen from ZCPO's Station 4 were conducting mobile patrol when they intercepted a utility van loaded with assorted brands of undocumented cigarettes.

Reyes said the vehicle and its cargo were impounded after the driver, Mushin Pajiran Mahlil, 22, failed to present documents showing legality of the shipment.

He said the van is loaded with 20 master cases of smuggled cigarettes, namely: five cases of Bravo, seven cases of Canon and eight cases of Fort with the total worth of P300,000.

He said the confiscated cigarettes will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for proper disposition.

On February 18, personnel of the ZCPO's Station 9 seized some P490,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes aboard two vehicles in Zone 1, Cawit village.

The drivers of both vehicles and the owners of the cargoes were not around when the policemen arrived around 5:40 a.m. of February 18 as they have abandoned the contraband.

The confiscated cigarettes were turned over to the BOC-Zamboanga District Office. (SunStar Zamboanga)
