Sangalang to rekindle winning ways with Abueva

IAN Sangalang says he is eager to play alongside his former college teammate Calvin Abueva as they try to rekindle their winning ways, this time with the Magnolia Hotshots.

Abueva, with whom Sangalang won championships at San Sebastian in the NCAA and then at NLEX in the D-League, was acquired by Magnolia last week in exchange for Chris

Banchero. Sangalang got a glimpse of the partnership when Abueva practiced with Magnolia for the first time on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021.

“Hopefully, we can do it again,” said Sangalang, who with Ronald Pascual and Abueva, formed the vaunted “Pinatubo Trio” in the NCAA.

Abueva said, though, that he still is learning the ropes over at Magnolia.

“I still need to learn the system of Magnolia,” said Abueva during an appearance on The Game. “I need to learn what adjustments I have to make with my new team.”

Sangalang said the acquisition of Abueva fills a hole in their front court. Aside from Sangalang, the Hotshots only have veteran Rafi Reavis and Jackson Corpuz to man the shaded

lane. Another veteran forward, Marc Pingris, has yet to decide on whether he’ll continue playing or hang his sneakers up for good.

“Having Calvin here is a big thing. He’s what’s missing from our team,” said Sangalang. (JNP)
