DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio dedicated the celebration of the 84th Araw ng Dabaw to all frontliners and those who succumbed to Covid-19.

In her message issued on Sunday, February 28, 2021, Duterte-Carpio said this year's celebration of the city's founding anniversary will be quite different compared to the previous years due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

She said this will be the second time the Araw celebration is "without the usual festivities and gatherings" due to existing guidelines against mass gatherings.

"A lot has happened in the span of a year; we are not the same city we were in 2020, and the threat of Covid-19 is still present, but as resilient and united Dabawenyos, we shall overcome, as we always have, in the face of adversity," the mayor said.

She also paid tribute to all Covid-19 frontliners, those who died from the virus, and the public who continue to abide by the minimum health protocols.

"Let us remember that while Araw ng Dabaw has always been a joyous celebration of pomp and pageantry, it is, at its core, a celebration of, and a salute to the Dabawenyo. And so, let this 2021 Araw ng Dabaw be a tribute to all our frontliners, to all whom we have lost this past year, and to each Dabawenyo abiding by the protocols set in place to ensure each other's safety, for it is our grit, our tenacity, and our discipline that will see us through to the end of this pandemic, in the hopes that we may one day safely celebrate our Araw ng Dabaw in the streets once more," the mayor said.

According to the Department of Health-Davao Region data as of February 27, Davao City recorded 13,056 cases, wherein 11,612 were recoveries, 813 were active cases, and 633 were deaths.

Duterte-Carpio urged the public to stay within their residences in time for the event.

She added the city government had prepared online events, which the public are enjoined.

Malacañang, on Friday, February 26, officially declared March 1 as a special non-working holiday in Davao City to mark the celebration of the 84th Araw ng Dabaw.

In an updated schedule of events, this year’s celebration will start with a flag ceremony at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, March 1, at the City Hall of Davao grounds, followed by a Misa Pasasalamat (Thanksgiving Mass), to be attended by department heads of the city government of Davao at 7:45 a.m. at the San Pedro Cathedral.

The virtual opening ceremony will still start at 8 p.m. on the same date.

On March 2, the Tilaw Dabaw and Hugyaw Dabaw are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, and the Pahalipay: #GlobeReinventDavao at 7 p.m., all online.

The Obra Dabaw will be held on Wednesday, March 3, at 10 a.m. while the Istilo Dabaw is slated at 5 p.m. and the Pahalipay: Smart 5G Night is set at 8 p.m., all online.
