CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma, in a pre-recorded video message on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, announced that he and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Antonio Rañola have defeated the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) and have been discharged after 10 days of hospitalization.

“It’s nice to be home to resume our duties and ministries. We know thousands have been infected and many have perished. This is the mystery of sickness. For us, who are given another opportunity to continue our ministry, we say, ‘Praise God’,” the prelate said.

He thanked the hospital administration, the doctors and care givers who took care of them and those who prayed for them.

“To you all, we say, ‘Daghan kaayong salamat (thank you very much)’ and with you, we say, dayon ang (the) 500 years of Christianity (celebration will push through),” he said.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, he said there are still so much to be thankful for, so much to prepare for and even to celebrate.

Palma was admitted in a hospital in Cebu City last Feb. 18 after he tested positive for the disease. He underwent a swab test after experiencing fatigue and a mild cough.

Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Secretary Michael Dino, his wife and their son were also discharged from the hospital on Saturday, Feb. 27, two weeks after they tested positive for Covid-19.

Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal III, president and chairman of Cebu Doctors Group of Hospital, who facilitated Dino’s admission to the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital in Cebu City, made the announcement on a Facebook post.

Larrazabal said Dino developed moderate pneumonia in both lower lung lobes and that plasma therapy, anticoagulants, steroids, and various IV antiviral medicines were administered to him.

In a statement, Dino said he experienced mild symptoms at the start which made him decide to be isolated under close monitoring. His condition, however, progressed from mild to moderate, which prompted him to go the hospital.

Dino thanked Larrazabal, his batch mate, and his attending doctors – Bryan Lim, Albert Santos, Joshua Abejero, Edgar Tan, Cindy Tan, Camille Espina, Juliet Noel, and Ma. Isabel Mahinay -- whom he said closely monitored his progress. (WBS)
